The key to a successful Altar call
May 12, 2017
How you deliver your Alter calls in an outreach can determine wheather souls get saved or not. Theres a fine line that ive been taught to follow when delivering such things. I mean when you think about it, you do an outreach whether its music, drama or preaching, the alter call is where you need the Holy Spirit to bring the conviction of sin in peoples heart that they they raise ther hand to get saved.
Firstly, the intro. This is up to you based on what you are doing. The intro needs to grip poeples attention, but this really needs to be thought out to the event you are holding. News atricles can be great because they relate to everyone, but it has to relate to what you are talking about. But a general intro about life and the problem of sin in the community can be just as effective. Intro needs to be brief, targetting the audience you have.
Secondly, there needs to be a revelation of sin. If I was to approach you and say "Hey man, I just went down to the lolcal Police station and paid a $3600 speeding fine for you" you would probably look at me with offense and say "What do you mean? I dont have any speeding fines you fool, are you trying to tell me im a bad driver?" And even tho I did pay those fines for you, I havent convinced you that you have broken the law, and were in need of me. So instead of telling people that they are destined for hell, you must first tell them about sin, and how we have broken Gods Holy Law.
This is how the conversation should have gone; "Hey man, you wont believe this... I just got back from the police station and its just been annouced, that the police have secretly put speeding cameras on every corner, even in every car for the last 10 years, they had the handcuffs out ready to arrest me but I paid my fine in time. But I over heard a conversation that they are on their way to you right now, as you have a $3600 fine awaiting you. You will most likely be arrested until you can pay." (Note: at this point the revelation of sin will of cut you to the heart, and now your ready for a Savior) "But as they were on there way to you, I paid your fine for you with my own money, so that they are no longer coming for you"
Now you would be eternally gratefull for what I had done for you, and instead of a rebuke you would be all over me with thanksgiving. But unfortunately this is how many people preach. And instead of winning souls we are turning them away from the Gospel.
Thirdly, once the revelation of sin is on the audience, then we can share the good news of Jesus. This is when we turn to the cross and ressurection of Jesus. How He came and died for sinners and gave Himself for us, and then three days later rose again... Then people can appreciate the sacrafice for their sin and recieve the Gospel with thanksgiving. This is how you get results in an Alter call.
Timewise, dont go on for hours! Keep it short, sharp and sweet. I never do an alter call longer than 4-5 minutes. Conviction doesnt last forever, theres a moment where conviction will hit and if your not asking for decisions soon enough, people lose attention and you've just lost them. What could of been a succcessful outreach, just got lost by an over the top Alter call.
So remember, short, sharp and sweet. But the most important over all 3 steps is PRAYER. Make you sure you pray for God to guide you in what to say. Its God's Holy Spirit that brings conviction so dont you think you should ask Him for direction? If you pray and even fast, Im sure God will help you with your alter call.
